On our doorstep
01
The great white fortress on the river, seat of government and of the central monk body. Visiting hours vary — we will check them for you.
02
Green, open fairways on the slopes beside the dzong — a quieter side of the capital.
03
The town centre: cafés, craft shops, banks and the everyday bustle of the capital.
04
Chillies, cheese, red rice and mountain produce by the Wang Chhu — busiest towards the weekend.
05
Where Thimphu residents walk their prayers, circling the white chorten from dawn to dusk.
06
The great seated Buddha at Kuensel Phodrang, looking out over the whole valley.
Beyond the valley
Combine nights at Amodhara with stays elsewhere in Bhutan, arranged with partner agents and hotels.
Prayer flags, 108 chortens and, on clear days, a line of Himalayan peaks on the road east.
A warm valley where the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers meet beneath Punakha Dzong.
Bhutan’s principal airport valley and the hike to the Tiger’s Nest monastery.
Glacial valleys, farmhouses and temples for those with a few more days.
Good to know
A few essentials for international visitors. Fees are set by the Royal Government of Bhutan and may change — your travel agent will confirm them when you book.
Most visitors need a visa: a one-off fee of US$40. You can apply online yourself, or your tour operator or hotel can apply for you. Visitors from India need a permit instead of a visa; visitors from Bangladesh and the Maldives follow a separate visa process — see bhutan.travel for details.
US$100 per adult per night. Children aged 6 to 11 pay US$50, and children under 6 pay nothing. Indian nationals pay Nu. 1,200 per night (Nu. 600 for children aged 6 to 11). The fee is set by the Royal Government of Bhutan and is paid with your visa or permit.
You may walk around Thimphu and Paro on your own. A licensed guide is needed to visit dzongs and monuments and to travel beyond these two towns.
Paro is Bhutan’s principal international airport, served by Drukair and Bhutan Airlines. The drive from Paro to Thimphu takes about an hour.
